United Kingdom: 10-15% common though less expected. Check whether service charge has been added automatically.

Australia: Tipping is optional but appreciated. 10% is a generous tip.

Frequently asked questions

Should I tip on the total including tax? In the US it is conventional to tip on the pre-tax amount. In South Africa and UK the bill typically does not show tax separately so tip on the total.

What if the service was genuinely bad? It is acceptable to leave a minimal or no tip for genuinely poor service. If the problem was with the kitchen rather than the server, consider this before reducing the tip.

Is it rude not to tip? This depends on local culture. In the US and South Africa, not tipping at a sit-down restaurant is considered rude. In Japan, tipping is actually considered impolite.

Should I tip on delivery orders? Delivery drivers typically rely on tips as significant income. R10-20 per delivery in South Africa or $2-5 in the US is considerate.

How do I split the bill unequally? Our calculator divides evenly. For unequal splits, use the per-person breakdown and individually adjust based on what each person ordered.
